Snjegunca

€300.00

The motif is based on a replica of the bobbin mask that was worn at the carnival for the character of the Snowwoman. In 1965, Jože Pangerc – Pepo from Dolgi Laz showed it to Medvešček and allowed him to redraw it. The technique of making the original mask is not known, whether it was embroidered, bobbin or crocheted. The Snowwoman mask was an obligatory part of the carnival procession and the only one that was forbidden to enter the house. She appeared in the courtyard, representing everything bad in the year, cold, disease, death... a kind of MEMENTO MORI.

The mask is from the 2nd catalog of the ethnological collection STAROVERSTVO in STAROVERCI by Pavle Medvešek.
